Railway/Rolling Stock
ENERGY STORAGE FOR RAILWAYS
By using energy storage solutions we separate principally two fields of applications. The so called “on board” installations, i.e. energy storage in locomotives, trains, wagons and tramways … These products used in this applications are introduced on this page. The second application is stationary installation, for example signaling and switching stations. Products used in stationary applications are shown under the market category UPS/ Power & Utility
We offer a broad range of rolling stock batteries in Ni-based and Lead-based technology concentrating to electrolyte fixed in Gel. These products have proven well in rolling stock application throughout the world.
Ni-Cd batteries are produced by using the traditional Pocket Plate design and the new high-tech Sinter/PNE technology and are built into railway optimized battery ranges. Ni-Cd batteries are traditionally used under extreme environmental and operational conditions where, for example, continues maintenance as well as proper charging of the system cannot be quaranteed.
All our products are tested and certified as per the latest railway standards.
NI-CD BATTERIES POCKET PLATE DESIGN
Pocket Plate Ni-Cd batteries with its more than 130 years in production history are still broadly used in this application. This technology is maily used by trandtional customers for whom CAPEX is driving the purchase decision.
- Robust construction
- Good price performance ratio
- Good cycle life – 1.000 cycles
- Good high power rating
- Good lifetime – 8 to 10 years in rolling stock
- High maintenance costs
- Limitation in chargeability
- Limited energy density – bigger footprint, higher weight
NI-CD BATTERIES – SINTER / PNE TECHNOLOGY
The positive sinter plate belongs to the 2. Generation of Ni-Cd plate technologies and has proved highest reliability during the last 80 years of it use in this application, even under extremest conditions. By combining the positive sinter plate with the negative pasted electrode (PNE) the water consumption and weight could be dramatically reduced. It provides the following features:
- Robust construction
- Good cost basis of PNE electrode
- Excellent cycle life – to 1.800 cycles
- Longest operational life time – to 15 years in rolling stock application
- Lowest water consumption in the market
- Excellent mechanical stability
- Perfect for high current application – due to very thin sinter plate capability
- Very good energy density – smallest dimensions and lowest weight
- Graphite free electrodes – no electrolyte change needed
- Excellent chargeability
- Lowest total cost of ownership (TCO)
LEAD BASED – PZV-R & GEL RAIL GEL BLOCKS
- Maintenance free - no water topping up needed, elmininating one risk of failure during maintenance
- Good cycle life - more than 1.000 rail cycles
- No electrolyte spillage during operation – no isolation failures, no environmental harm
- Low self discharge
- Easy and cost effective replacability
- Fully isolated, maintenance free connector material
